Takeaways from Sunday’s 38-33 Jets loss to the Raiders:

1. Geno Smith is a confounding quarterback. He played one of his best games of the season Sunday, going 20-for-32 passing for 290 yards and two touchdowns, but he did not play well enough to win … again. He threw a game-sealing interception when the Jets had a chance to steal a win at the end. He struggled in the red zone and the Jets offense went 2-for-6 in that area, which proved to be the difference in the game.

Smith has played well, but you can see why the 36-year-old is now a journeyman starter. He is not quite good enough to elevate the offense around him. I know some fans are clamoring to see rookie Cade Klubnik get his shot, but we are not close to that. If we get into December and the Jets season is over, that is the time to play Klubnik.

The Raiders are paying Smith $16.2 million this season, so Sunday was an interesting situation where Las Vegas paid Smith to play against them. By the end of the game, you could see why.
