A group of surfers had a close call with a massive great white shark Wednesday in San Luis Obispo County before it splashed one surfer in the face.
Dave, a surfer who has used a drone to look for the beasts in the Pismo Area for the past two years, captured one lurking beneath their surfboards Wednesday morning.
“Hands down the most vivid, clear water shark encounter I have ever recorded… It’s 9’6” long,” Dave said while sharing the hair-raising video on Instagram.

The experience surfer said he’s “happy it ended up just being a close encounter.”
He sent the chilling video to some of his friends, who were all in disbelief, while one even asked if it was AI-generated. “How about ask the Pier Avenue crew if it’s real,” Dave added.
Earlier this week, a shark knocked a fisherman off his kayak in the water near Leffingwell Landing in San Luis Obispo County.
The fisherman managed to get back on his kayak and tried to paddle back to the shore, “but punctures in the hull caused the kayak to take on water, forcing him to swim to shore,” the Cambria Fire Department said in a statement.
After looking at the photos of the damaged kayak, Dr. Chris Lowe from the California State University Long Beach (CSULB) Shark Lab said that “it was reasonable to assume the kayak had been struck by a shark.”
